Clients came out on top in this year’s LawNet awards, with the winning firms all showcasing strategies that put the customer first.
And the law firm network says it shows the step-change in the sector that’s being led by the mid-size independents that make up its membership.
The winner of Law Firm of the Year went to Manchester’s George Davies Solicitors LLP and Managing Partner of the Year was Kim Carr of Midlands firm FBC Manby Bowdler LLP, who has led the firm since 2008.
According to John Thomas, chief executive of LawNet: “George Davies stood out this year, with a range of initiatives tailored to improve service for their clients, combined with robust internal processes to keep employees on track with the business plan. The firm is delivering real results with a number of high profile cases and a real presence in the legal rankings, all backed up by strong financial performance. They’re forging their own opportunities and this is a firm that is going places.”
Speaking of managing partner winner Kim Carr, FBC Manby Bowdler senior partner Niall Blackie said: “Kim has been instrumental in the firm’s continued growth. She is an inspirational and accomplished leader and we are fortunate to have her directing our business.” Mrs Carr’s award follows hard on the heels of recognition in the most recent Legal 500 for the 35 partner firm, and “One To Watch” in the 2012 Sunday Times Best Companies to Work For survey.
Young Lawyer of the Year winner was Emma Atkins of Denison Till. Less than 2 years post-qualification she is already handling complex and high level cases in her area of specialisation. She has also taken the lead in the firm’s online and social media activity.
Best Business Development or Marketing Initiative went to Grindeys LLP, who recognised the importance of the role they play in their local community and set about developing a platform to bring together their pro-bono, charitable and fundraising activities, which has raised their profile and attracted new contracts.
Best website went to Ashton KCJ, winning for content development and site navigation that is focused firmly on the client and their needs.
The award for Excellence in Risk Management and Compliance went to Vanderpump & Sykes Solicitors, for initiatives designed to embed a compliance culture in the firm, including long term compliance planning, comprehensive firm-wide training programmesand risk registers.
And Matthew Arnold & Baldwin won the Commitment to Client Care award, for a range of initiatives that range from secondments and flexible pricing models, to relationship partners and free in-house legal surgeries and training for clients.
Added LawNet’s John Thomas: “The aim of these annual awards is to get to the heart of what makes a LawNet firm, with an innovative attitude that’s underpinned by a commitment to excellence and strong risk management. Every submission this year demonstrated how firms recognise the importance of creating meaningful client interactions, and that’s going to be a game changer in the years to come. ”

About LawNet:
LawNet was established in 1989 to enable a collaborative, non-competing national network where independent law firms could access big firm resources and benefit from collective purchasing, shared knowledge, best practice and expertise.
All members share a commitment to excellence and must achieve and maintain LawNet’s own ISO.9001 standard and the associated Mark of Excellence in client service.
The combined income of the 65 firms comprising LawNet is currently in excess of £250m – equivalent to a UK Top 15 law firm – with members ranging from £2m to £15m turnover.
Independent research shows LawNet is most highly valued by members for delivering in six key areas – training, networking, PII, practice development, marketing and compliance. It currently places some £1.2bn worth of PI cover alone for members each year, which helps stabilise premiums for firms.

Lincolnshire Show is a bit of a doggy-do...
This year’s Lincolnshire Show is a bit of a doggy-do for tail waggers.....
For it’s the first year that dogs have been allowed on the Showground and there are all sorts of treats in store for four-legged visitors.
As well as just being allowed to have a bow-wow with the other hounds around, the best-behaved mutts will be able to strut their stuff in the dog ring in the Discovery Zone. For the Kennel Club is holding a Scruffts Competition for cross-breed dogs, sponsored by James Wellbeloved, which takes place during Thursday’s Show.
And dog-owning visitors will be able to leave their pooch down at the canine- crèche, being run by local animal charity, Jerry Green Dog Rescue.
“This year is a real first for dog lovers and it’s great to see how much support there has been,” said marketing manager Sarah Poucher. “It’s been on the agenda for some years and needed careful consideration because of issues of hygiene, the livestock on site, and the areas which are not open to dogs such as the food court.
“Obviously dogs have to be on leads and some areas are out of bounds, but other shows have been trialling it and we’ve been learning from their experience, and are looking forward to seeing some happy tail wagging this year!”
Any crossbreed dog owners who are interested in competing in the Scruffts competition can just turn up on the day and pay £1 entry, and all the money raised go to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust. The judges will be looking for good character, health and temperament in the following classes:
Most Handsome Crossbreed Dog : 6 months - 7 years
Prettiest Crossbreed Bitch : 6 months - 7 years
Child's Best Friend : 6 months - 12 years and handled by a young person between 6 and 16 years
Golden Oldie Crossbreed : 8 years or over

Editor’s Note: Heats for the 2011 Scruffts competition are being held from February to October throughout the country, with the Lincolnshire heat taking place at the Lincolnshire Show on 23rd June. First place finalists from each of the regional heats will be invited to compete in the grand final at Discover Dogs in November, where a celebrity judge, will take into account the importance of dog training and responsible dog ownership, and will judge the entrants on good character, health and temperament as well as looks and ‘star appeal’. The overall winner of this year’s Scruffts competition will receive the ‘Wendy Richards Trophy’, in honour of the late EastEnders star, who was a long-standing supporter of the competition, Discover Dogs and many canine charities. The trophy will be presented by her husband, John Burns. Scruffts is run in support of the Kennel Club Charitable Trust, which has donated over £4m worth of grants to benefit the canine world since its inception in 1987. Its mission is to make a difference for dogs through charitable donations for health, welfare and support initiatives.
New President will focus on education and sustainability

The new President of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society is a renowned academic figure who is committed to developing education and sustainability in agriculture.
Professor David Chiddick, CBE, former vice chancellor of Lincoln University, declared it a ‘privilege’ to follow in the footsteps of other distinguished Presidents, who have included HRH Princess Anne and the Earl of Yarborough.
Married with three children, Professor Chiddick is now Emeritus Professor at Lincoln University. He is working with the Agricultural Society development committee to bring together the Society, University and other key partners to develop agricultural programmes in a way that best integrates education and community. He will also be focussing his attention on driving sustainability in agriculture, a vitally important theme for the Society.
His interest and involvement in agriculture dates back 20 years to his time as Pro Vice Chancellor at De Montfort University, when he took the lead in rationalising the agricultural training on offer through the three sites in Lincolnshire – at Holbeach, Caythorpe and Riseholme. That process resulted in the consolidation of agricultural education at Riseholme and food sciences at Holbeach, providing a springboard for the college to become part of the new University of Lincoln in 2001 and Holbeach to achieve the distinction as the National Food Manufacturing Centre.
He said: “Education on the Showground site has expanded significantly over recent years, and now brings together agriculture, countryside and community with increasing involvement across higher and further education and amongst schools. Getting more young people involved in understanding the agricultural community in its broadest senses is crucial and we have the facilities to achieve that at the Showground.”
“I grew up in an agricultural community in Norfolk and coming to Lincolnshire with its agricultural heritage was like coming home,” added Professor Chiddick. “I have been involved in the Farm Board in the county for the last 20 years and have seen major changes in agriculture during that time. As President, I am keen to see a successful County Show which drives these vital themes of education and sustainability in agriculture.”
The appointment come at an exciting time for the Society, following the publication of a recent economic impact survey which shows that a massive £44m is being injected into the national economy thanks to the Lincolnshire Events Centre, which attracts over 215,000 visitors a year.
The Lincolnshire Events Centre is the Agricultural Society’s commercial operating arm and brings together agricultural, educational and conferencing activities.
The £7m EPIC Centre at the Showground was opened two years ago, providing a conference and events facility, capable of hosting conferences, balls and seminars, and is designed also as an educational resource and state-of-the-art events centre for up to 1,900 people.
Environmental sustainability is at the core of these recent developments, and is a defining theme of a proposed master-plan now being drawn up for the Showground.
Also leading the Society during 2011 is John Lockwood, who continues in his role as Chairman for a third year. Master of the Burton Hunt and a former High Sheriff of Lincolnshire, he runs the family property company, Castle Square Developments, alongside the family farm.
The Lord Taylor of Holbeach, CBE, has been named President Elect for 2010.
